About

The Répertoire des milieux naturels protégés du Québec (Directory of Private Protected Areas in Quebec) was created in 2007 by the Réseau de milieux naturels protégés who noticed, back in the early 2000, that there was no compilation of protected areas on private lands in Quebec. Each of the 1115 sites now featured in the Répertoire (Directory) was thus entered on a volunteer basis by owners or managers of these natural areas. As of 2016, these sites add up to 56 619 ha, i.e. almost 566 km2. The Répertoire (Directory) covers all parts of the province where there are private lands. Sites protected by stakeholders of the conservation movement on private lands complement all government-protected parks and protected areas on public land. This web directory allows you to discover these protected natural areas on private land and locate them on a map.

The Répertoire (Directory)

The Répertoire des milieux naturels protégés du Québec (Directory of Private Protected Areas in Quebec) is a great tool. It can be used as a collaborative tool to fuel land protection strategies and as a mapping tool to locate protected natural areas on private land in Quebec and appreciate their importance.

Its objectives are as follows:

  • Compile and update an exhaustive directory of natural areas on private land in southern Quebec (with natural characteristics that justify their conservation) protected by non-government organizations, i.e. federal, provincial or local groups;
  • Demonstrate the skill and ability of communities to protect and manage natural habitats;

  • Enable the accurate assessment and compilation of legal protection actions in these natural areas throughout Quebec or in specific regions at all times;
  • Provide information on measures taken in these natural areas to regional stakeholders involved in protection or management;
  • Promote private land conservation as a direct contribution to long-term protection of our territory and environment at the government level and in municipalities.

The Répertoire des milieux naturels protégés du Québec (Directory of Private Protected Areas in Quebec) is an analytical tool designed to help the decision making process. For instance, it allows the integration of protected sites into regional planning. In addition, citizens can easily visualize and locate protected areas near them, and learn more about natural habitats protected or accessible to the public.

The Réseau de milieux naturels protégés (Québec Alliance of conservation organizations)

Le Réseau de milieux naturels protégés is a provincial organization working to promote natural area conservation on private land. This network reflects the diversity of stakeholders involved: citizens, landowners, conservation organizations, and managers of protected areas at the municipal, government or para-government levels. Over 11,000 members, volunteers and employees are directly involved with the organizations in our network.

Conservation tools on private land can help to:

  • Safeguard a family heritage;
  • Take advantage of tax benefits or other financial incentives;
  • Plan and settle an estate;
  • Protect a property from development;
  • Promote the sustainable use of resources.

The creation and update of the Répertoire des milieux naturels protégés du Québec (Directory of Private Protected Areas in Quebec) by stakeholders from non-government organizations was made possible thanks to the contribution of individuals and organizations who own or manage protected natural areas on private land. More than 300 people contributed to the compilation of these data and promotion of the key role and skills of the community and private sector in protecting Quebec’s natural heritage.

The Répertoire (Directory) has been developed since 2007 with financial support from the Fondation de la faune du Québec, Environment Canada, Quebec’s ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, and the Echo Foundation.

Methodology

The selection process for properties eligible to be added to the Répertoire des milieux naturels protégés du Québec (Directory of Private Protected Areas in Quebec) works as follows:

Sites included in the Répertoire (Directory)

  • A natural area located in Quebec, with natural characteristics protected by a non-governmental conservation organization (conservation NGO) through non-profit actions, either as landowner, manager or beneficiary of a conservation agreement (servitude, lease, etc.).
  • A natural area designated as Habitat of a Plant Species Listed as Threatened or Vulnerable, Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Wildlife Refuge, Nature Reserve on Private Land, or “Paysage humanisé” (Man-made Landscape) by the Government of Quebec or the Government of Canada, even if no conservation NGO is involved as landowner or manager.

Sites excluded from the Répertoire (Directory)

  • Any site owned and directly managed by a government (Canada, Quebec or local). However, any site belonging to a government but where management has been assigned to a conservation NGO is eligible and included.
  • Any site used primarily for sports, non-profit or recreational activities (outfitters, hunting and fishing clubs, forest or aerial adventure parks, adventure/challenge/sports trails, logging areas, etc.).
